If you’re reading this, you’re aware of HiHo’s new website. Thanks to a sponsorship from DevFuzion, our website was expanded and improved upon and made AMAZING around the beginning of this year. While developing the look and content, we decided HiHo needed a mascot–something that spoke to our mission of encouraging a lifelong love of learning and an intrinsic curiosity. Cats and curiosity seemed to go together, but that wasn’t it. Owls represent wisdom, but…still not it. We all agreed….an octopus. That was it!
Well, for starters, with four pairs of arms we surmised that the HiHo octopus could get it’s hands on lots of activities all at once, thus playing into our goal of providing a place to learn through doing. We know, we know, arms aren’t the same as hands, and octopus don’t have hands, but we were going less literal with our pick. More important than the arm/hand connection was the nature and habits of octopus that made us pick it to represent HiHo.
Octopus are extremely intelligent and curious. They routinely find ways to escape when confined, seek out new and more challenging problem solving opportunities, and excel at mazes. Perfect, we thought, especially since that last sentence could be used to describe most human toddlers on just starting to explore the world around them.
We admit– not the deep, philosophical explanation some of you may have wanted. But, we like our octopus, and plan on having it pop up in our materials and at our exhibit and be the friendly face that represents our mission of bringing a children’s discovery center to the Tri-Cities.
As the last detail of really making it ours, however, we need a name. That’s where you come in. We’re running a contest to help name the HiHo octopus. We’re asking kids to submit their suggestions for the name of the HiHo octopus! E-mail suggestions to email@example.com by the deadline of 10:00 pm Friday, March 17, 2017. We’ll pick our favorite 3, then open it up to our Facebook page followers to decide. The person submitting the winning suggestion will receive a $25 gift card from Adventures Underground with prizes to be rewarded for the other 2 finalists as well. So, dig deep, channel your inner octopus, and help us solve this problem by submitting a great name suggestion!
